Production Log

Genre Research:

Before I can make my own Magazine Style Radio I need to understand what Magazine Style Radio actually is. To understand this is went on to 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/programmes/genres' to try identify some of the key features of a Magazine Style Radio.

Genre Definition: genre is a specific type of music, film, or writing. Your favourite literary genre might be science fiction, and your favourite film genre might be horror flicks about cheerleaders. Go figure.

Example 1: BBC News Clip
This first example is the genre 'news'- The 1 minute clip consists of lots of details and two topics what I managed to fit in just over 1 minute. Greece's debt crisis was the first topic what featured in the news clip. This topic has been headlined through out most news companies across the globe.

I found the one minute clip I found came from BBC I Player Radio and its a 5 minute recap on the news from around the world. I managed to crop 1 minute 10 seconds which includes two topics which the presenter talks about.

Example 2:
Example two is a news broadcast under the genre of 'entertainment'. The 1 minute 8 seconds i managed to capture includes a few topics which the presenter 'Aleena Naylor' talks about but she also is very chatty to the audience which attracts them to carry on listening. Also there always seems to be background music so there is no dead noise throughout the recording so it doesn't un attract the audience and doesn't bore them.

Again I found the second example on BBC Radio I Player under the genre category of Entertainment In the 'BBC Radio Derby' section. Aleena Naylor was the presenter of the radio show mainly talking about the topics she specialises in which are 'Hymns, Worship Music and different world faiths'

Example 3: Example 3 was found underneath the genre category of 'entertainment'. Its a very chatty show with the presenter Al Murray discussing various topics from again The Crisis in Greece to whats happening in the world of sport. Again as the presenter is chatty and has an upbeat tone in his voice it attracts the audience.

Again we found the last example from BBC radio I Player form radio 5 live. The presenter Al Murray was chatty and attracted the listeners. His chatty tone would want the listeners and audience to continue listening.

Codes and Conventions of a magazine style radio show:
Codes and Conventions are the features which make up a Magazine Style Radio show. They are the techniques what should be included in the show for it to be known as a Magazine style Radio rather than anything else. More than one topic should be discussed throughout the few minutes of audio.  No dead silence should be present so whenever someone is not speaking there should be some sort of music or noise.

Examples of codes and conventions:

  • Topics are talked about.

  • Consists of a solo audience

  • Interviews

  • A bit of dead air is picked up during the recording

  • Viewers could get involved by (Phone calls, Text Messages and Social Media)

  •  Song playing in the background.

  • No stopping in the audio

  • Greeting The viewers

Understanding Genre:

In Media and in Magazine Style Radio shows they always have a genre, this has been between:

                                                                          Message
Sender <--------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Receiver

But in Magazine Style Radio they have another term about the above.  But in their case it is between:

                                                                               Code
Encoder <--------------------------------------------------------------------------------->  Decoder

Target Audience for Magazine Style Radio-
Magazine style radio shoes is based upon what ever subjects they are talking about, and if it suits your age group. Most of magazine style shows are based upon peoples matters or either what is happening in your local area.

But most of magazine style radio shows are targeted upon these sorts of people:

  • Elderly People

  • People who want to listen on certain matters which isn't on the news

  • People who like to listen to the radio

  • People who are studying media studies as their GCSE

Many Elderly people listen to magazine style radio shows as they can listen to the show and actually don't have to look at a monitor to see them talk about it. Many elderly people tune into the radio as they is what they might of had instead of the new generations of TV.

Finally, many teenagers listen to magazine style radio shows as an example because they have taking Media Studies as their GCSE and that they need to know what a magazine style radio shows is as it is under the curriculum to learn Magazine Style Radio.

How do magazine audiences relate to Radio Audiences:

They both contain the two things, which are that they are both listened/produced for radio, and that people who are listening to the radio are turning into for listening to a certain thing, and that is also what magazine style audience is listening to also.

Both shows are hosted to entertain a certain person who may fall under :Age, gender, race and location. And that these subjects may be under a show, which may get people listening to that certain show.

My group: Oliver Norris, Dominic Kehoe, Carl Higgins, Phoebe Edwards

Our Target Audience for our own Magazine Style Radio Show:

Social Media Addicts was the topic myself and my group decided to base our Magazine style radio about. There are different ways we could find out research for our Magazine style radio. We could interview people who associate themselves with being a 'Social Media Addict' and see their view on the whole situation. We could also turn to Secondary research methods such as the internet to gather statistics and facts that would be useful to use throughout our radio show.

We need to include 4 main topics related to 'Social Media Addicts' to make it a Magazine Style Radio. The 4 topics our group decided to talk about were:
  • Can Social Media Affect Your Health
  • How To Treat Social Media Addicts
  • Risks of Social Media
  • Social Media's impact upon the World
Demographics of our topic: Social media addicts.

Gender is a key demographic for Social Media Addicts. As recently it has seen that the amount of girls who use instagram has increased, as more girls have seen to be taking photos of themselves  also known as "selfies" and that females want just want to take photos of themselves just to show off what they look like. Where as it's not considered manly if a man repeatedly kept on taking selfies like females.  Different social media sites seem to be suited for different genders. Social media sites where your allowed to express your appearance such as instagram as the main aspect of the app is to post pictures of yourself and your life are mainly attracted to a larger female based target audience as girls are stereotyped to love and always be aware of the way they look whereas males tend to not care as much.

In addition, we said that social class is a key demographic of social media. As is you are between the Middle Class (C) it is more likely that you use any sort of social media than a person who is in a higher social class (A/B)

Can Social Media Affect your Health:
Sleep: Sleep is a major part of life. Its what gains you energy for the day ahead. However by using a cell phone, tablet or laptop browsing social media sites late at night can seriously mess up your sleeping pattern given you fewer hours of rest per night. Its recommended to have 7 and a half - 9 hours of sleep a night to feel nourished for the day ahead, but with social media a lot of people have less than the recommended time which is unhealthy for the human body in my aspects. Whereas if social media and technology is running your life its more likely for someone to not gain the recommended hours of sleep per night.

Addiction. Several studies have actually suggested that the brains of technology abusers develop a certain pattern of change over time. Studies also suggest that the amount of times technology abusers check their gadgets are just enough to trigger the addiction-oriented parts of our brains. Addiction can lead to other health issues as explained before such as lack of sleep. If someone is addicted to their phone or any other media use it will keep them constantly at it preventing them from sleep.

How to treat social media Addicts:
Some organisations are setting up a retreat to a forest within the UK. When there they will be no communication with the outside world, and that you will be left with no sort of technology and that they will not be able to use social media. This is so that people who are addicted to social media can be put off a bit of social media and that in the end they cannot be addicted to social media, and that it can help them in the long run. Social media addicts tend to shut themselves out from the outside world which makes it hard for their families and close friends to relate to them.

Risks of Social Media:
Social Media can be entertaining to some but it does come with risks. Anything someone posts online it stays there for good, even if you think you delete it, it says on the site you posted it on. People post things on social media which they only expect their friends to see however they do not notice that people they do not know can still see what they are posting. Also the fact that popular social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are accessible to any one who wishes. This puts the risk of strangers being able to speak to you. A well known example of a risk from social media is someone called a 'cat-fish'. This is when somebody pretends to be another person whilst online. This is a risk as people may not be aware who they are actually speaking to whilst online. This can result in many people earning a 'good' friendship and arranging to meet up in real life with someone they've never actually seen in person. This leads to them meeting up and realising it's not the person who they think they know resulting in many cases of murder. Breck Bednar a 14 year old boy from Essex who's hobby was to play on his Playstation. He created a friendship with a person over Playstation which resulted in them meeting up. He was murdered on the 17th February 2014 by a 19 year old Lewis Daynes who faked his Identity over Playstation. Many risks come with being online.

The year 2014, has allowed social media to become more interesting some could say. People have found many interests due to their social media apps.
9-20 seconds
According to Mashable, Tumblr is one of the most popular apps in the US. The app Tumblr, allows people to ‘reblog’ pictures that interest them.
21-36 seconds
It has also allowed people to create this new concept called 'shipping,'Shipping is from the word relationship or friendship, it is the desire for two people to be in a relationship, most of the time romantically. Out of 20 ships, over half are same sex ships/homosexual ships.
37-45 seconds
Tumblr is an up and coming app, that hosts over 225.1 million blogs according to wikipedia.
45-60 seconds
Tumblr has many trends that it promotes, one of the most notable statements is a black choker. Which has seen to be very important in the teenage girls life.

There was a campaign which tried to get them back home. Michelle Obama was apart of the campaign. (17 Seconds)

Getting to use Audacity:

Audacity is the recording device we used to record our 4 minute audio clip. We used 4 topics we a script varying the people who spoke. We also recorded vox pops and an outside broadcast.

Audacity is the recording device we used to record our 4 minute audio clip. We used 4 topics we a script varying the people who spoke. We also recorded vox pops and an outside broadcast. Overall we came to roughly 3minutes 50 seconds of our finished production.

An example of the construction of our show, this was early stages of our show as it only shows 30seconds of our audio.

We used a Mac to produce all of our work including the construction of our show. We used the app audacity whilst on the mac.

We used this Tascam microphone to record our outside broadcast and our Vox Pops whilst we were away from the Apple Macs and from Audacity. We used the microphone to pic up our recordings whilst out and then used a USB cord to transfer the audio onto the Apple macs for it to be edited.
